Updates to 18th Edition Electrical Regulations
The regulatory body for electrical installations, the NICEIC, has announced an amendment to the British standards BS7671:2018 (18th edition of the IET Wiring Regulations). As members of the NICEIC, Diamond Services is committed to upholding the standards of the regulations, ensuring its electrical engineers are fully up to speed with the second amendment to the 18th Edition of the well-renowned standards.
What are the changes to the 18th Edition?
The amendments include the introduction of a new requirement for Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs), updated requirements for the safety design for buildings and a new chapter on Prosumer’s Low Voltage Electrical Installations.
Specifically, it includes;
- the requirement for the fire safety design of buildings to be documented where specific conditions of external influence exist, such as protected escape routes and locations with risk of fire;
- method for determining the requirements to provide overvoltage protection;
- changes to identification, labels and notices, such as for consumer units, affecting how safety information is provided to the user of the electrical installations;
- a chapter on Prosumer ‘s Low Voltage Electrical Installations, in a new part, Part 8
The Amendment continues to embrace new technologies and Prosumer’s Low Voltage Electrical Installations and is an essential update to provide for the safety of electrical installations in the UK.
Further changes are included throughout all parts of BS 7671, including the incorporation of Amendment 1:2020 to BS 7671:2018 as part of the main document.
What is the NICEIC?
The National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) is a well renowned voluntary body that regulates training and works for electrical contractors and firms across the UK.
The British standards ensure that all electrical installations are completed safely and competently. They apply to the design, erection and verification of electrical installations, plus additions and alterations to existing installations.
